Play House Costumes at the Movies!

October 23, 2009 by in General

Play House Costumes at the Movies! Opening nationwide today is Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant.

We supplied 100 assorted pieces of constructed and vintage clothing and accessories – not worn but as set dressing for this film.  The rental in the spring and fall of 2008 netted The Play House just over $7,500.

We received this rental because the Set Decorator on this film is David Smith. David came to The Play House is 1968 and was the Properties Master here during the 70’s. When David left The Play House he went to New York City where he worked in the 80’s on several projects with Margorie Kellogg, on soaps, and a film.  In the early 90’s he moved to Los Angeles, beginning work on several TV series, including N.Y.P.D. Blue and The Guardian.  In recent years David has been primarily doing film work, including In Good Company with Dennis Quaid, Steve Martin’s Shopgirl, Last Holiday with Queen Latifah, The Holiday with Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz, Jude Law and Jack Black, and the recent Eddie Murphy film Imagine That.

The Vampire’s Assistant was shot on location in New Orleans in an abandoned theatre, and on a set depicting the Cirque encampment.  David has said that part of the pleasure of doing this film was a chance to revisit the theatrical skills and techniques  which he developed while here at The Play House.

Our costumes were used in the theatre dressing rooms and in the wardrobe trailer of the Cirque camp.  In the fall re-shoot in Los Angeles a fight scene was added in the wardrobe trailer where our hats had been used to dress out the shelves.  David and his crew in 2 days built 3 sets of dummy copies of our hats to be torn apart in the fight. None of our costumes were harmed.

The costume shop appreciates that David wanted to give back to The Cleveland Play House with this rental, and we are looking forward to going “costume spotting” at the movies.
