Are you looking for a unique way to bring the context of our performances into your classroom? For just a couple dollars more per student, we offer both pre- and post-show workshops for every production, tailored to individual grade levels and topics of interest.
Our team of teaching artists will engage students in the creative process using a range of discussion topics and theatre games. Enhance your students’ experience further with a behind the scenes tour of the Cleveland Play House!
Consider the following workshops:
THE 39 STEPS
In this thrilling writing workshop, students will learn the elements of a detective story, create a villainous character, and sketch out a plot line for a short story. Students will be on the edge of their seats as they learn how to create suspenseful plots, heighten tension through dialogue, and develop nefarious villains.
THE KITE RUNNER
In this thought-provoking workshop, students will learn about political oppression around the world and throughout history. Using theatre games students will connect world events to personal experiences of power and discrimination. Students will explore issues of political oppression, racial discrimination, and cultural and religious conflict.
THIS WONDERFUL LIFE
This eye-opening workshop will teach your students about the impact of several extraordinary individuals who forever changed the 20th century. Students will engage in theatre exercises to discover how their own actions create a ripple effect and influence others. Enlighten your classroom about how each individual has the potential to leave a footprint on history.
BACKWARDS IN HIGH HEELS
In this exciting workshop, students will learn about the history and impact of dance as they watch famous dance routines and learn how to perform iconic dance steps. Students will identify the features of songs and dances that were popular in 1930s Hollywood, examine the evolution of dance from the Foxtrot to Hip-Hop, and learn how to perform famous styles of dance.
THE TRIP TO BOUNTIFUL
In this thought-provoking workshop, students will explore the definition of “home” by examining the different cultures that have migrated to the United States. Students will investigate what home means both in their own lives and the lives of African Americans. They will reflect on the places that have given them strength by creating powerful theatrical tableaus expressing their unique sense of home.
MY NAME IS ASHER LEV
In this creative workshop, students will become lawyers, jury members, and eye witnesses to debate the purpose of art’s ability to reflect or shape culture. Awaken a passion for intellectual discourse among your students with this unique and memorable workshop.
LEGACY OF LIGHT
Transform your classroom into a 17th century French salon where students become Enlightenment era philosophers, scientists, literary scholars, and members of the bourgeoisie. Your students will learn all about the role of female scientists in the Age of Reason, the rise of Democracy, and the Scientific Revolution. Book your workshop today and let the fun begin.
THE LITTLE MERMAID
Dive under the sea to discover the longings of one mermaid. Hundreds of variations of The Little Mermaid have been discovered from different cultures around the globe. After reading several versions of this classic tale, students will compare and contrast the plots, tones, and prose styles. Then, students will draw from their imaginations to invent alternate endings.

WORKSHOP OPTIONS
Pre- and Post-Show Workshops | Cost: $75 per class session
A teaching artist will come into your classroom for a hands-on session with your students. These 60 minute sessions will utilize the performing arts as tools to connect themes from the matinee performance to your classroom curriculum.
Design-Your-Own Workshop | Cost: Varies per workshop
Available on site at The Cleveland Play House or in your own classroom! Create a custom workshop that serves the specific needs of your students. This is a great way to incorporate the arts into teaching other subjects, such as science, math, or history. Each workshop will involve interactive activities geared toward meeting your curriculum goals.
Tours – Our Final Year in this Building! | Cost: $50 - $100, determined by group size
View life behind the scenes in a theatre that’s been producing shows for the better part of a century. Stops on the tour include our theatres and production areas, including the costume, props, and scenic paint shops. Bring your group for your last chance to glimpse into the vibrant inner workings of The Cleveland Play House before we relocate to Cleveland’s downtown Theatre District!

A JEWEL OF A TALE:
AESOP'S FABLES, ANANSI'S FOLKTALES AND OTHER AMAZING STORIES
Grades Pre-K - 3 (children must be at least 4 years old)
$200 per classroom (30-student limit)
Bring the magic of theatre right into your classroom with this exciting re-telling of Aesop’s fables and Anansi’s folktales. Acclaimed Teaching Artist Nina Domingue will perform in your classroom and provide a hands-on workshop with your students. Participants will have the opportunity to explore and create stories based on the
style of these two master storytellers.

PLAYWRITING RESIDENCY: FROM PAGE TO STAGE
Grades 6 - 12 | $600 per classroom | 6 Sessions
Empower your students to tell their stories, and develop their own unique voices. A teaching artist will guide your class through the entire creative writing process and into the production of staged readings through a series of intense, targeted workshops. Your students will learn how to develop a 10-minute dramatic script that tells a high-impact story through dialogue and action as well as think like actors, directors, and designers as they watch their stories leap off the page and come to life on stage.

LITERATURE ALIVE RESIDENCY
Grades K - 8 | $100 per classroom | 4 - 6 Sessions
Bring literature to life in your classroom with this imaginative multiple-week residency. A teaching artist will work with your students to produce a play based on a book that they are studying in class. Develop your students’ literacy skills as they learn how to analyze character, plot and setting, and translate these literary elements into a dramatic script. This incredible residency will engage your students as they write a script, and create and perform their own original play like a professional cast and crew.
